What are Spider veins?
In the medical world spider veins are known as telangiectasia. They are small, thin veins that lie close to the surface of the skin and usually take on one of three basic patterns. They may appear in a true spider shape with a group of veins radiating outward from a dark central point, they may resemble tiny branch like shapes or they may be simple linear and appear as thin separate lines

What causes spider veins?
A number of factors can contribute to the development of spider veins including genetics, pregnancy, hormonal shifts, weight gain, sun exposure, lack of exercise and having an occupation that requires sitting or standing for long periods of time. Studies have also shown that estrogen weakens capillary walls, thus the chances of developing spider veins is increased with the use of birth control pills and estrogen replacement therapy as well as during pregnancy.
